The Nature and Scope of Patient Advocacy in Research. To evaluate advocacy’s ethical status, we must first define and describe the activity. There is no single agreed-upon definition of patient advocacy in biomedical research, however; and the advocacy literature contains a variety of potential definitions.Advocacy, by contrast, recognizes the dynamic interplay of a myriad of factors and influences which often lie well beyond the reach of the evaluator's desire for control. Many epidemiological findings with potential to improve health are welcomed by the public and decision makers alike.
