The idea of a logarithmic earthquake magnitude scale was first developed by Charles Richter in the 1930's for measuring the size of earthquakes occurring in southern California using relatively high-frequency data from nearby seismograph stations. This magnitude scale was referred to as ML, with the L standing for local. Magnitude means how big or strong something is. Higher numbers mean stronger earthquakes. The scale is a little bit tricky because for each number you go up in the scale, the strength of the earthquake is 10 times stronger. For example, a 5.0 earthquake is about 10 times stronger than a 4.0 earthquake, and 100 times stronger than a 3.0 earthquake.
